StrEsS!!!! (eNgLiSh wOrK)

Stress!!!! Nowadays, this is the word which students say it quite often. So, are they really under stress? The answer is definitely YES.

As the level of education in Singapore is getting higher, students are getting more and more stressed up, pressurized. Changes were made to the syllabus of textbooks and it is getting more and more challenging and difficult to cope with. Expectations surrounding students are therefore getting higher too.

Studying and learning now seems to be only for the seek of getting good grades in tests and examinations. Students are afraid of failing in tests and examinations. This may be cause by parents pressurizing their child too much. An example of this would be the movie, ‘I not stupid’ by Jack Neo. In that show, the EM3 student, Kok Pin stands at the parapet of the common corridor of an HDB block, preparing to jump to his death because he has failed to deliver his promise to his mother that he would get 90 marks in a test.

Not only education is the cause of students feeling stressed. There are also things like relationship which would add on to the stress, whether it is the relationship within the family or friends. People always think that the only thing which all children have to worry about, care about is their studies and nothing else but it is not true. If for example, a family is having financial problems, it would not only affect the adults of the family but also the children.

However, having some stress do works well for people. A right amount of stress can help one to perform better in a certain task. Without stress, people might not improve. Although stress now seems to play apart as a form of motivation, too much of it will turn the effect negative.

There are certain signs which would help to identify whether a child is over-stressed or not. Under the Singapore Children Emotional Distress Scale, your child may be cracking under stress if he has displayed symptoms like, appearing worried about many things, showing little enjoyment in things, feeling miserable, unhappy, depressed, shedding tears over doing some things, having been irritable and quarrelsome, complaining of aches and pains, appearing forgetful and showing poor concentration.

If your child is reacting to most of these symptoms, do help him/her. Help him/her to develop coping skills such as teaching him how to organize his time. Make sure he has time for play, rest and nourishment. Help him lead an all-rounded lifestyle. But, if your child's symptoms persist despite your intervention or interfere with his ability to function day to day, you might want to speak to a doctor, teacher, counsellor or a psychiatrist.

In conclusion, to parents, try not to pressurized and push your child too much. Understand their learning pace and set expectations according to it. If possible, try to lessen their burden by not arrange too much outside school activities like tuition, when he already have loads of homework from school. As for students, although studies are important but do not give too much stress to yourself. Do understand that having too much stress may cause things too get even worst.
